Discover Gu_de The New Handbag Brand To Hit The Market - Forbes

Meet Ethan Song, the Managing Director of the super-cute accessories label Gu_de. How is it pronounced? Well apparently it’s ‘good’ by name, good by nature.

Think minimal shapes such as top handle and cylindrical bags that are full of vintage charm. Produced in South Korea using leathers and embossed leathers, the founder Ji Hye Koo takes inspiration from the ‘60s and ‘70s to offer accessories that are timeless in appeal.

Felicity Carter: What was your first fashionable memory?

Ethan Song: Since childhood, I wanted to be a fashion designer. I especially liked decorating/styling myself, in school days my friends copied/ followed and liked my styling items and also top and asked for my advice.

FC: How, when, why did you get into the industry?

ES: I majored in Textile but liked bags and shoes. Therefore, I managed to complete bags and shoes design course at institution as a hobby. I first joined a young casual brand based in Korea in 2001 as an accessories designer.

FC: How would you sum up the aesthetic?

ES: The aesthetic of gu_de is timeless beauty. Expressing classic yet uniqueness with gu_de's style.

FC: What is luxury to you?

ES: Classic yet timeless. Sometimes, fancy and luxurious but it can also be seen in a variety of ways, depending on how you express it.

FC: Who is your customer?

ES: Regardless of age or gender, a person who can express own self in her or his differentiated way rather than just following the fashion trend.

FC: What are the cornerstones of your company?

ES: The know-how of a long career experience, the faith that we promised with the unwavering brand identity when we started/created gu_de. Also gu_de's family and customers who have been with us till now.

FC: Which was the first-ever piece that you designed and how did it come about?

ES: My first designed piece is Milky bag. I usually enjoy shopping on vintage market and where I get a lot of inspirations from. I have a lot of interests in hardware, shape, material and etc.

I started with the thoughts/ideas of bringing fun with unique details with combination/harmony of past and present.

FC: What was on your current mood board?

ES: The latest mood board is for F/W20 and the concept is "Glam". Proposing the reinterpretation of luxury with gu_de branding/style.

FC: Tell us about the process...

ES: It is important to reinterpret with gu_de style. To start the season I set the concept and decide on the basics - colour, materials, ornaments and others, according to the concept. Then creating mood board with inspirational materials.

The design will be formed after design sketch and sample mock-up test.

FC: What materials are your favourite to work with?

ES: When you think of gu_de, the material that comes to mind would be croc-embossed calf leather. I like to use bold colour on croc-pattern and I am preparing to offer a variety of materials from F/W20. 

FC: What are your immediate and long term goals for your company?

ES: gu_de is gradually growing. I want to expand the brand step by step rather than in a hurry

Although gu_de started as a bag brand but I will be working on designing shoes and also want to expand my field through other various attempts.
