Raquel Denise Lowry loves purses. The passion for the accessory developed when she was a young girl.
"My go-to accessory has always been the perfect bag to complete my look," she said.
She decided she wanted to do something entrepreneurial with her creativity. About two years ago, Lowry, 33, began blueprinting a series of planners to develop her own brand for them.
She wasn’t sure where or how to begin. Her sister suggested designing totes due to her love of bags. Within 10 hours of that conversation, Raquel Denise Handbag Boutique was born and the focus shifted from planners to handbags.

To launch her business, Raquel Denise shares space with Jonzey's Closet at 978 S. Clinton Ave. in the Swillburg neighborhood. All items in the purse boutique have been chosen by Lowry.
About the bags
"I have an eye for bags that will turn heads in a corporate setting to a causal day of running errands," she said. "I think it’s important that whatever bag someone carries that it tells a story. So each bag that is apart of my boutique tells a story."
That story can be a busy parent or just someone who lives for the day, she said. There are purses for basketball fans to movie buffs. When pricing products, Lowry examines how long it takes to market and sell the product.
"I like to ensure my bags are one-of-a-kind, but affordable to those who live paycheck to paycheck, from those who do not," she said. "Everyone deserves a bag that speaks to who they are."
About the owner
In addition to being an entrepreneur, Lowry is also a benefits manager who earned a Master’s of Science in Management from Rochester Institute of Technology.
A Rochester resident, Lowry believes in giving back, serving on the associate board for the Center for Youth, the Serve Division of the United Way Emerging Leaders Society and the inaugural committee of the Emerging Leader Development Program for the United Way.
